NOTES FROM THE JUROR

As soon as I saw this show in person, I was again reminded of the limitations of viewing art online.  I’m very impressed with the paintings I had the privilege to “judge” for this exhibition!

When I jury a show, I keep the words of my dear friend the late Everett Raymond Kinstler in my head—“communication-feeling-imagination”.

Communication- does the artist have the skills- drawing and values, to communicate his concept

Feeling— Is the artist telling me a story that I feel he believes and was excited about

Imagination—Am I seeing a subject in a new and original way?

A painting can be very well executed but perhaps I’ve seen the viewpoint many times, equally as well executed.  So I’m looking for the little something extra that sets it apart.

Kathy Anderson is known for her garden and floral paintings which depict the subject in a unique way in their feeling of reality, combined with a loose natural look.

Kathy is a master signature member of OPA; an artist member of the National Arts Club, NY, where she is in their permanent collection; an artist member of the Salmagundi Club NY; and a signature member of Allied Artists of America.  Kathy is also a long time member of the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters, and is currently participating in a plein air trip in Montana, with the show being held at the Bozeman Art Museum.

Her recent awards include OPA gold medal master division, Salon Show; Plein Air Salon best floral ;  OPA 2nd place, masters division , Virtuosos of OPA “I believe in painting from life to gain the ability to see values and temperature, and in having a strong foundation in drawing”

NOTES FROM THE JUROR

I based my selection first on originality of the piece and then the execution of the idea.
First Place caught my attention immediately because of the strength of the colors and values, the more I studied the painting the more I loved and  found beautiful passages from the darting yellow grasses to the distant reeds on the left of the image. The whimsical notationations left much for the viewers imagination to explore.

Second Place was delicately and freshly executed. I found this piece to be sensitive to the medium and to the subject matter. Jeanette ‘s selection of what to leave out made this a very desirable piece in it’s abstraction.

Third Place  I just love the feeling in this piece, the story telling aspect and near to my heart, the “light” as it danced around the painting. This painting exudes love of subject and light. The colors were well balanced and showed much understanding of where to place them.
